The War On Success: How the Obama Agenda Is Shattering the American Dream Best Review

Tommy Newberry has spent his life helping people become more successful entrepreneurs and how to best use the success their hard work has brought them. This book is his clarion call warning Americans what is put at risk by the agenda put forward by the Obama administration and the Congress led by Pelosi and Reid.

This is a positive book that focuses on the qualities that bring success and is clear about why the statist/collectivist/liberal/whateveryouwanttocallit is the enemy of your success. Newberry also discusses why it isn’t just your material well being that is being put in jeopardy. He shows you how the ObamaPelosiReid agenda actually kills off the spirit and character traits that lead to the kind of prosperity and greatness America has enjoyed for more than two centuries. Let me take you on a brief tour of the book. You will find a lot more when you read it, and I hope you do. But I also hope you think of others, especially young people who might be receptive to this book’s message even though they don’t often hear this positive and optimistic message at school or among their peers.

The book has ten chapters with a four page introduction. The intro is an open letter to President Obama asking him to stop waging war on success.

Chapter one begins by showing you the virtues and qualities that made America prosperous, free, and so worthwhile that tens of millions of people risked their lives to become Americans and millions more want to come here each year. On pages 10 and 11 he provides a useful glossary of common words that liberals and conservatives use differently. Newberry puts you on warning, for example, that when you hear Obama or Pelosi use the word fair or fairness you have to understand they mean something very different than a conservative would understand as being fair. Conservatives consider it fair to play be the same rules while liberals need to adjust things so the outcomes are equivalent.

Chapter two begins with the John Updike quote that “America is a vast conspiracy to make you happy.” And discusses American character, personality, free market, and generosity and what can be done to destroy these blessings. You will recognize these destructive actions because they are being used today.

Chapter three focuses on the fairness idea I mentioned above. If everyone gets a trophy, the trophies are meaningless. Taking away real achievement and success because it would damage the self-esteem of others destroys self esteem for everyone. I love Newberry’s list of how we can “unleash the victim within” on page 49.

Newberry uses the fourth chapter to show how envy is used by the Left as a means of stoking destructive class warfare and fostering misery everywhere. He quotes class warfare statements from Hillary Clinton, Robert Reich, Joe Biden, and Richard Gephardt as just a few of the more egregious examples from recent times. Newberry also provides a useful table on page 59 that shows how the share of taxes really breaks down in our society and that the bottom 50% now only pay just under 3% of all the income taxes. Of course this is very dangerous, because of Obama et al can get 51% of all the people very dependent on government largesse paid for by the 49%, they believe they can have a permanent majority for the kind of all pervasive central government they have been working towards for more than a century.

Chapter five shows you how the statists exploit the human need to want to get something for nothing. Whether it’s the pill to melt fat away without exercise or retiring from your lottery winnings (that will never come), the real world exists despite the promises made by your favorite statist.

Chapter six shows you the kinder gentler Marxism of the progressives and why they have to destroy the natural rights discussed in the Declaration of Independence and firmly believed in by our founders and all Americans until, say, John Dewey and Woodrow Wilson. The Progressive MUST have created rights that are controlled and created by the state in order to control you enough to work their agenda. This is why you can never let any progressives anywhere near the lever of power or teach in your classrooms. You pay for the classrooms so they are yours, not the property of the teachers, their unions, or the politicians.

Chapter seven spends time with the open Christianity of the author mentioned elsewhere in the book. Newberry provides a very helpful comparison of Socialism versus the Bible on page 118 and page 129 provides you with 8 parenting principles that will help you raise a socialist. While socialism sounds nice, it is really a tool for control and not the kind of choice, free will, and excellence God wants us to learn and exhibit.

Newberry also believes in virtues. Nowadays we talk about values because, after all, not everyone agrees what virtue is, right? Well, the reality is we know good from bad. We know what virtue is, but too many people want permission to do the wrong thing and still let themselves off the hook. Chapter eight focuses on reclaiming our character by restoring virtue to a place of honor and admiration in our society. Know you don’t get to claim virtue by talking about it. You have to live it. On page 152, the author provides you with 10 steps to mediocrity. I think you will shudder when you read it.

Chapter nine focuses on the principles you need to live responsibly and take charge of your own life. Then he offers a bill of 13 responsibilities we can takes together as the citizens of the United Sates (page 190 and 191).

The last chapter is a plan for action. On page 196 he lists 15 steps entitled “Let’s Roll!”.

Appendix 1 includes some letters from Newberry’s American Dream Letter Writing Campaign and Appendix 2 provides some additional sources on TV, radio, the web, books, magazines, and organizations you can use to further your personal resistance movement against the “War on Success”.

Enjoy the book, but also share it with those whom you think might need the information and will be receptive to what the author can teach them.

By denigrating all the qualities that make success possible—self-reliance, ambition, hard work, the pursuit of excellence—the administration is setting the stage for Big Government to step in and “guarantee” everyone’s success through socialist-style redistribution. Brash, direct, and unafraid, The War on Success tells you what’s at stake: nothing less than the survival of the American Dream.

God, Guns and Guts! Take Back America!! – Bigfoot –
This is a great book. Newberry hits it perfectly and says exactly what the Obama administration hates to hear…The Statists (Obama) are wanting to change America to a European state…from cradle to grave. Obama believes that success should come “through” government and not from the ideas of individualism. Don’t be fooled by this administration…they all believe that they know what’s best for you. They believe that you should be silenced. Well, it’s time to tell the government to “shut up” and “get our of our lives”! If you believe that you are responsible for your actions, for your decisions and for your future…then I encourage you to read this book. It will enlighten you and show you that you are not the problem…but Obama and his Statists ideas is the problem.

The New Revolution – John Mathieson –
Freedom! Our Generation will have to make some very difficult choices. Will we select freedom or slavery? We will determine the fate of the Nation and ultimatly the free world. Yet most of us are woefully prepared for what can happen. Mr. Newberry makes some very bold statements. His opinions go against those who want to stay in power. Yet if those in power had been right in the 30’s social security would not been in the shape it is today. If those in power had been right in the 60’s the “War on Poverty” would be over by now and we would not have any povery. If those in power had been right in the 70’s we the middle east would be a peaceful happy place. Why do those in power want to expand government? SO THEY CAN TELL YOU WHAT TO DO. That is SLAVERY.
Failure is a wonderful teacher if a person is willing to learn. Mr. Newberry calls for bold steps and actions that can and will make this Country Great again.

The Next Generation – C. Renfroe –
The War on Success, by Tommy Newberry, inspired me to make sure my kids ‘get’ the American Dream. Teenagers today receive mixed messages about the importance of individual achievement in exchange for the ‘collective good’. They are made to be ashamed of striving for ‘being the best’ at something in favor of alleged fairness. We need to remind them that the desire for personal success blesses everyone around them while challenging everyone to improve. As the Olympics demonstrate, world records were meant to be broken. America is a place for ordinary people to achieve the unimaginable. This book reminds us of this message…and reminds us to be proud of what our success has meant to us and the world.

The Dogs of Riga (Kurt Wallander Series) Best Review

Monk, the character on television, has extreme anxiety and is obsessive compulsive. A far more interesting character than Monk is to be found in crime novels, Kurt Wallander the Swedish detective created by the author Henning Mankell. Wallander suffers deeply from anxiety. He even (like many people) self-medicates by drinking too much. Like so many cops, he’s divorced and very isolated. Wallander is drowning in doubt even though he solves difficult crimes. Michael Ondaatje, my favorite NY Times book reviewer says “For me, Henning Mankell is by far the best writer of police mysteries today.”

The second book in the series is The Dogs of Riga takes place in Sweden and Latvia in 1991. Most people in Latvia live in fear because the communists are in charge. Reading this shows how fear infiltrates daily life. Wallander is besieged with worry because he sneaks into the country (legitimate fear) and never trusts his own tenaciousness. His ordinary life is constantly interrupted because of the disease of anxiety.

When people are anxious they tend to want to people please, and then too much truth goes ignored. When hurts and wants are unspoken they go underground and build into resentments. Anxious people suffer with short term thinking and are afraid of hurting others. One of the most important things anyone can do to build more authentic relationships is to be able to talk about hard things. Inability to talk about hard things means the pile of resentments deepens and it can be tough to dig out from under it. People tend to get self righteous about their resentments which then makes it hard to consider the truth of the other person’s point of view. Truth always lies in between people. Hearing the truth from someone who loves you is one of the most important ways to grow.

If you are anxious and people please you will lose track of yourself. Love is meant to help you be more of yourself, not less. Diane Keaton was asked why she never married and she responded that she knew she would lose her identity. Kurt Wallander does get lost. His father was disgusted he became a policeman. Kurt still plays with the idea of quitting to be a security guard, to regain his father’s approval. Though he’s in his early 40’s, his anxiety clouds his ability to recognize he only needs his father’s love. These are a terrific series of novels and Wallander is a very three dimensional character who makes mistakes in relationships because of anxiety.

Customer Reviews

Kurt Wallander in Latvia – Frank J. Konopka – Shamokin, PA
This is the second book in the Kurt Wallander series, and I found it much more compelling than the first, although I thoroughly enjoyed that one also. Once again there is a mystery to be solved, in this case the appearance of two corpses washed up on the Swedish shore in a life raft. The initial question is, of course, who are these men and where did they come from? Once that is established, and it’s not easy, Kurt is dispatched to Latvia to help in solving the murder of the Latvian policeman sent to Sweden to assist.

This is a Latvia in the midst of its struggle to free itself from the grip of the Soviet Union, and it is a drab and cheerless place, where the citizens are frightened and distrustful of almost everyone around them. Wallander meets a group of folks organizing against the government, and when he returns home he goes back into Latvia by means of smuggling routes to help those people. There is a scene of great carnage, and Wallander must decide which of two high ranking police officers is the person responsible. The ending is exciting in the extreme, and you just keep turning the pages to find out what happens.

I’ve enjoyed the first two books in the series, and am now reading the third. I hope to get through all of the ones published in English as they become available to me.

Dull, disappointing and listless YAWN – Mitch Talbot –
This is my first Wallander book and I found it heavy going. It started out well with the two dead men on the raft drifting into Wallander’s jurisdiction, but once he goes to Latvia, it’s just one vague, awkward paragraph after another. Lots of hints about great suspense, possible death and a revolution brewing but the details are never filled in and you find yourself more and more fed up with Wallander and his endless cups of tea, sleepless nights and trips to the crapper. I never really felt like I knew what was at stake in this novel, it was all very vague, full of insinuation and very little actual political detail. I’m not sure why I kept reading it. I guess I wanted to find out if it ever picked up and got good. It didn’t.

I’ll read another Wallander, just to see if this was a fluke. Hope so, because I like the character, but the writing was mediocre and the suspense non-existant.

Wallander is good, but … – Jeffrey A. Thompson – Iowa City, IA USA
This is my first Mankell book. Wallander is a wonderful character. As an middle-aged man, I can relate to Wallander’s self doubt and self questioning. His co-workers have far more respect for him than he does for himself. I am in a happy marriage, but I can understand how Wallander as a divorced, lonely guy falls in love with every eligible woman he meets. He solves the case more through bull dog tenacity than cleverness, although he is far from stupid.

He paints a bleak Latvia and I have no idea whether it is historically accurate. I went to post Soviet Hungary back in 2000. I can visualize the architecture he was talking about, but I am sure there is no comparison with the culture.

The book is suspenseful, but the plot pushes credulity at times. The author doesn’t make him out to be James Bond, but the action sequences for this character doesn’t quite fit. The plot is suspenseful and there is nice turns in the plot. How he solves the puzzles is satisfying. He is not perfect, but he is methodical and determined. The book is a good read.

I got it brand new for less than what my school bookstore wanted for a used copy. I also got it *fast*, so it arrived in time for my second week of class. There are other people in class who ordered theirs from different sites who are still waiting for their copies 7 weeks into the semester. As for the book itself, it’s one of the better written textbooks I’ve had to read. The subject matter is very interesting and up to date, and I don’t find myself bored by it, which is pretty rare for a textbook!

WAY overpriced** see details! – Noah Nolting – St. Louis, Mo
Let me first be clear, I do not actually own THIS book. What I own is the “Looking Out, Looking In” 12 ENHANCED EDITION.

What is this ENHANCED EDITION you ask?? It is this item, “Looking Out, Looking In” 12th edition AND the “Student Activities Manual for Adler/Proctor/Townes’s Looking Out, Looking In 12th Edition” PUT TOGETHER IN ONE BOOK!!

Seriously why buy this if your going to have to buy the “Student Activities Manual for Adler/Proctor/Townes’s Looking Out, Looking In 12th Edition”anyway?!?

When you buy these books seperately, from Amazon even, it is over 0

I just happened to notice this was sold different from my book and thought it was just ludicrous that these book companies try to gouge all the money they can from people.

This is the ISBN of my book: 0-495-46819-3 Feel free to check it if you don’t believe me.

The more you know!!!

Good Book – Kenneth L. Davis – Houston, TX USA
I only bought this book for class, but what I learned from it I use everyday in all types of relationships. It has many communication techniques that are practical enough to be used everyday.

Good Seller – Carmon M. Allen –
Had a problem getting a response from the seller, wanted to cancel product but seller did not respond until the book was already sent 1 week later! Will not buy from them again. Returned the book and still awaiting refund.

Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things Best Review

I’ve been a fan of Donald Norman’s “The Design of Everyday Things”, (also known as “The Psychology of Everyday Things”) for many years, but only recently finally read “Emotional Design”

Norman greatly expands his ideas about design here, breaking it down into visceral, behavioral, and reflective design. Behavioral design includes everything discussed in Everyday Things, visceral design is design that appeals to our most basic instincts, instincts that prefer things like primary colors, sweet tastes, round smooth objects, and smiling faces. Finally, reflective design is design that appeals to us because it’s “cool”, or because it has a message, or it’s clever, or it supports a cause we believe in, or it has prestige.

Norman expertly weaves together his analysis of these three levels of design, including plenty of examples to clarify his points. Of course, the truly great designs often appeal to us in two or all three of these ways. His examples range from teapots to cars to showers to roller coasters to water bottles. In the chapter entitled, “People, Places & Things”, Norman offers the best analysis of “always being connected” that I have read, clearly explicating both the positives and the negatives of being in that state.

Finally, the last two chapters discuss machines and robots, whether they should have emotions, and if so, what kind and in what degree.

Overall an excellent book that will really make you think about design in some new ways, regardless of what kind of design you do.

Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things Overview

Did you ever wonder why cheap wine tastes better in fancy glasses? Why sales of Macintosh computers soared when Apple introduced the colorful iMac? New research on emotion and cognition has shown that attractive things really do work better, as Donald Norman amply demonstrates in this fascinating book, which has garnered acclaim everywhere from Scientific American to The New Yorker. Emotional Design articulates the profound influence of the feelings that objects evoke, from our willingness to spend thousands of dollars on Gucci bags and Rolex watches, to the impact of emotion on the everyday objects of tomorrow.
Norman draws on a wealth of examples and the latest scientific insights to present a bold exploration of the objects in our everyday world. Emotional Design will appeal not only to designers and manufacturers but also to managers, psychologists, and general readers who love to think about their stuff.

Customer Reviews

Subtitle: Everyday things – sorry, robots don’t count – yet – not a rockstar –
The subtitle of this book is misleading: “Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things”. The last 1/3 of the book deals with how emotions will play a role in robotics. Even in 2009, robots are still behind the scenes. Perhaps Norman’s assertion that when robots take on emotional aspects, they will become commonplace but until then, we could all stand better designed ‘Everyday things’.

One thing that Norman does predict in this 2005 book is that the video game industry would do well to take a better look at behavioral and reflective design – rather than purely visceral design.

The wild success of the Wii over the Playstation 3 shows Norman to be somewhat of a prophet in this regard. Wii design from a play standpoint focuses nearly entirely on an antithesis of the visceral/visual sense – with players not having limbs and so forth. Controls are also simple rather than complicated. The focus is on personalization and relational aspects; crossing multi-generational lines.

In all, the book would be well served with many more examples of actual everyday things that connect on visceral, behavioral and reflective levels rather than theorize about the future of servant robots.

good but not fun – C. Gomez –
I really like this topic, but i found the book a little hard to read because some parts can be boring.

It’s a good book

A good read but it won’t change how you think about design – Gócza Zoltán Károly – Budapest, Hungary
I really enjoyed the first part of the book. It is a good read as the Design of everyday things was (which is a must), with great examples and stories.

The concepts in this book are quite simple and the book becomes a bit repetitive after a while. Having said that, I would recommend the book if you are a designer or if you closely work with designers.

(The last quarter of the book is about emotional machines and robots and less about design. These I simply skipped.)

For the uneducated it is an impossible read as it assumes you have at least a basic understanding of both. The premise of the whole book is fascinating and I wish there was a overview at the beginning of each chapter and then the details for those who can appreciate them. Chapters of this book would be wonderful for high school and college science classes as it sparks the imagination about more natural solutions to our approach to creating all the products we have come to expect in our society. We destroy while we create. Does not seem to make us the masters of the universe we imagine ourselves to be. If you can conquer without bloodshed, are you not superior than those that conquer but leave to waste all they have gained? This is really the point of the book and an inspiring read. I would have given it 5 stars if it was more accessible to all – maybe the general public can not understand the science, but they can start to demand that products be made more in tune with nature if they knew this was possible.

Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature Overview

Biomimicry is a revolutionary new science that analyzes nature’s best ideas — spider silk and prairie grass, seashells and brain cells — and adapts them for human use. Science writer and lecturer Janine Benyus takes us into the lab and out in the field with the maverick researchers who are applying nature’s ingenious solutions to the problem of human survival: stirring vats of proteins to unleash their signaling power in computers; analyzing how spiders manufacture a waterproof fiber five times stronger than steel; studying how electrons in a leaf cell convert sunlight to fuel in trillionths of a second; discovering miracle drugs by observing what animals eat — and much more.
The products of biomimicry are things we can all use — medicines, “smart” computers, super-strong materials, profitable and earth-friendly business. Biomimicry eloquently shows that the answers are all around us.

Customer Reviews

Nurturing from Nature – Duarte Miguel Prazeres –
I like this book. It calls one’s attention to a simple fact – Nature does it better – but it also shows the way to scientists, engineers and the general public – mimmic Nature. Excellent reading for open minds!

Overall a terrible book – N. Rasmussen – Arcata, CA USA
I was not a happy camper after reading this book. I would say that her writing style is not to my taste, as she uses way too many metaphors and goes on and on about the quirky personalities of the scientists that she is interviewing.

Now, when it comes to fields in which I know something about, she does a TERRIBLE job. The is as whole part about quantum consciousness where a particular scientist that is not very well respected in his field (was in the movie What the bleep – worst movie ever) and if she were to interview just about anyone in the field of quantum physics, the whole chapter would have to get thrown out. But did this happen…no. She seems to latch onto research that she likes, and just disregards the rest.

Not a good author, not a good book, NOT a good representation of biomimicry!

I wish Janine Benyus could give me the week back that it took me to read this book so I could do something more productive!

Great scientific insight using easy to understand concepts – Geraldine – California
What a great book with excellent insight into our world. I can’t believe it was written so long ago(’97), yet we seems to have made little or no progress since. She is able to convey detailed scientific information in a way a non-science person can understand. The only downside is her book is so enlightening it can be frustrating to see how stupid we’ve been….repeatedly.

Killjoy Overview

Avery Delaney has tried to put the past far behind her. Abandoned by her rapacious, conniving mother when she was only three days old, Avery was raised by her grandmother and beloved aunt Carolyn. Then, when she was ten, she saw her grandmother murdered in cold blood, before Avery herself was shot and left for dead. Miraculously, she survived. The killer was soon caught, convicted, and is currently serving a life sentence in Florida. This traumatic experience propels Avery into a life of law and order.

Her razor-sharp mind and ability to gather data and decipher evidence has made Avery an expert crime analyst for the FBI. But soon she will have to use every one of her skills on a case that hits painfully close to home.

Avery’s workaholic aunt, Carolyn Salvetti, is certain her (hopefully soon-to-be ex-) husband sent her the gold embossed reservation to the posh Utopia Spa in the mountains of Colorado. At first she is resistant, but then she figures it will be a welcome respite from the cutthroat advertising business, not to mention a networking extravaganza. Plus she persuades her niece to join her for the two weeks of luxury and decadence.

But Carolyn never makes it to Utopia. Under false pretenses, she is taken to an isolated retreat by a handsome stranger with a dazzling smile, suave demeanor, and the darkest of motives. His name is Monk, a hired assassin. Now, with scant clues and fewer resources, Avery must track down and save Carolyn – and outmaneuver a brilliant killer who is part of an elaborate plot of madness and lethal vengeance.

Customer Reviews

Fun and interesting, despite incomplete conclusion – Peabody823 – IL USA
Wish I could give it 3 1/2. Really liked the play between Avery and John Paul; they were really cute together. I also liked how everyone was really smart in this one, but I didn’t quite feel the resolution was complete without knowing what happened to Jilly. An interesting and exciting read, but I liked “Mercy” better.

Not a ‘joy’ to read, but it ‘killed’ time(2.5 stars) – Brian J. Oneill –
Another in the ever-expanding genre of ‘romantic thrillers’, filled with flawed, cliched, or just boring characters we’re expected to care about.
The premise wasn’t bad, but the writing style seemed a bit ‘herky-jerky’, and I had trouble just plowingthrough the action. The ’sex’ scenes are pretty much the same as they are in every other book in this genre.

I never really connected to any of the characters. Avery and John Paul had no charisma, and everything betwen them seemd forced. The scenes of the two of them together reminded me too much of Linda Howard’s ‘Up Close and Dangerous’. The kidnapping subplot was a bit better, though the pacing of the overall story was odd, and this subplot was dealt with too soon in the story. Again, the three women were little more than caricatures, with Carrie’s ‘aggressive/bitchy’ personality, and Anne’s disconnect from reality, becoming overwhelming.
As others have said, Garwood’s storytelling technique drained the excitement from some scenes, and the plot was convoluted, but at least she threw in a plausible surprise at the end.
One complaint was that Garwood seemed to expect the readers to have followed Avery’s story from whichever books she’d been in previously. I thought that Garwood might have explained the ‘cancelled school trip to D.C.’ a little more thoroughly for new readers.
The story let me down in some respects, and pleasantly surprised me in others…but I’m not sure I’ll be looking for any more titles by this author.

Truly Awful – Peacejoggr – Marietta, GA United States
Yikes! This book falls into the “it is so bad it is funny” category. I finished it only because it kept me laughing so hard at how bad it was. In one scene our so-called heroine actually says “Heavens to Betsy” as she hits her peak during sex. I nearly dropped the book from laughing. The plot is totally unbelievable from beginning to end. Like many other posters here, I was hoping the hit man would succeed and kill the vapid heroine and her disgustingly superficial and self-centered aunt. I found so many scenes that were hysterically funny because they were so stupid. Several times the heroine and the bland hero who inexplicably falls in love with her are on the run from certain death and the ridiculous girl stops to do her yoga. Simply hilarious. And yes I called her a girl because she is definitely not a woman by any stretch of the imagination. She may have the body of Helen of Troy but she is mentally no more than a teenager. I can understand a man might want to have sex with her but anything more than that is simply not plausible. She and her aunt would drive any man to murder in a very short amount of time. If the aunt’s husband had taken out a contract on her, I would have helped him pay for it. Plot–unbelievable. Dialogue–hilariously bad. Characters–cartoons. Overall–AWFUL.

The challenge remains to develop a cogent, coherent theory explaining how and why this miracle began when (ca. 18th-19th Centuries) and where (mostly England and its colonies initially) it did. Appleby’s complex, poly-causal model of the emergence of a ‘culture of capitalism’ is arguably a restatement of the question rather than an answer. In our book “Death from a Distance and the Birth of a Humane Universe” (2009, BookSurge) a simple, powerful theory of history founded on a new theory of human evolution is described. On this theory each of the major transitions in the 2 million year human record, including the modern miracle, results from employing the ancient evolved human adaptive strategy (coercive management of social conflicts of interest) on a new scale. Each new scale of human economic (adaptive) power is driven by the local introduction of a new coercive technology – broad distribution of individual gunpowder weapons democratizing the state in the case of the modern miracle and the co-local, contemporaneous Scientific Revolution. This strikingly simple theory apparently explains all the major transitions in the human evolutionary, archaeological and historical records with compelling economy.

The Relentless Revolution: A History of Capitalism Overview

The unlikely development of a potent historical force, told with grace, insight, and authority by one of our best historians. With its deep roots and global scope, the capitalist system provides the framework for our lives. It is a framework of constant change, sometimes measured and predictable, sometimes drastic and out of control. Yet what is now ubiquitous was not always so. Capitalism took shape centuries ago, starting with a handful of isolated changes in farming, trade, and manufacturing, clustered in early-modern England. Astute observers began to notice these changes and consider their effects. Those in power began to harness these new practices to the state, enhancing both. A system generating wealth, power, and new ideas arose to reshape societies in a constant surge of change.

The centuries-long history of capitalism is rich and eventful. Approaching capitalism as a culture, as important for its ideas and values as for its inventions and systems, Joyce Appleby gives us a fascinating introduction to this most potent creation of mankind from its origins to now. .

The Relentless Revolution – Sacramento Book Review – Sacramento, CA
Books on Economics tend to be for economists; furthermore they tend to approach the subject as science. Joyce Appleby’s //The Relentless Revolution// doesn’t pretend that economics is scientific or that its “laws” are anything more than theoretical models that function only in simulation. Instead of presenting Capitalism in a model or a natural law, Appleby relates its history with all the contingencies and near misses that accompany all histories. She exposes the lie that capitalism and free trade were an inevitable development; they were not. Rather, Capitalism was impossible without the cultural revolution of the Renaissance, as well as the unique role of the British, how British laws controlling the economy eventually cost it the enormous economic lead capitalism gave it, and how that mantle passed both to the United States and Germany. She relates how Capitalism helped create the uber-nationalism that contributed so much to both World Wars.

//The Relentless Revolution// covers not only all the good that Capitalism has given us, but also the racism, nationalism, and jingoism that it has fostered and encouraged. Appleby’s work here is one of the first honest looks at how capitalism and economics works, not as a science but as a process continually created and recreated by the People.

Reviewed by Jonathon Howard

good on basics – gonolin –
Factually accurate, good on the basics, but really nothing new whatsoever. Most exasperating was the failure to control the hurdle above which materials became suitable for the book. In other words, she doesn’t know how much a reader might know. So she writes for Martians in many places – explaining what’s obvious to every human being. And then she lopes off into the jungle with Stanley and Livingston which has nothing to do with capitalism.

Niall Ferguson should be your first stop on this subject, unless you are getting your arms around the basics.

She writes well, and probably is the sort of teacher one might have wished to have had…

Why capitalism is a cultural, not just an economic system – ROROTOKO – www.rorotoko.com
“The Relentless Revolution” is on the ROROTOKO list of cutting-edge intellectual nonfiction. Professor Appleby’s book interview ran here as the cover feature on January 6, 2010.

like it – Netc – Salt Lake City, Utah
read one a year after this starts previously, looked for them in my local library but no luck. good enough that I’ll keep looking. funny, interesting characters.

Dead Witch Walking – Mojoguy – Oxford, Ct USA
Dead Witch Walking is a fun romp with a White Witch named Rachel.
She’s been kicked out of a government agency similar to the F.B.I. but with all agents being supernatural; like werewolves, vampires, and in Rachel’s case a witch.
Her old agency is now out to kill her. Her best friend and one of her partners is a vampire whom Rachel is not sure if she wants to drink her blood.
Her other partner is a macho pixie. He may be small in stature but he’s big of heart .
Kim Harrison writes with a distinct sense of humor. I have laughed out loud many times while reading this.
The story combines a good mystery story with a lot of humor and is Very Enjoyable. !

Good fun read. – Hapless Pen – Narnia
Something to read if you want a quick suspense/humor drabble. Worth reading, considering the sequels. Only complaint is that there’s too many loose endings.

Dead Witch Walking(The Hollows, Book 1) – A Thought – USA
I intially downloading this to my Kindle because it was free and if its free its for me is my biggest Motto. Let me just say I am hooked I went and branched out and bought the 2nd book also for my kindle. This is a great read I really recommend this series. Rachel is the lead character she is a witch her partner is a pixy and her other partner is a vamp. Awesome is the only way to sum it up.

Management : Leading & Collaborating in the Competitive World Overview

Bateman and Snell’s Management: Leading & Collaborating in a Competitive World is a text with a fully modernized functional approach. This text is maintaining the four traditional functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, while modernizing and re-visioning the concepts as delivering strategic value, building a dynamic organization, mobilizing people, and learning and changing.

Bateman/Snell’ results-oriented approach is a unique hallmark of this textbook. In this ever more competitive environment there are five essential types of performance, on which the organization beats, equals, or loses to the competition which are cost, quality, speed, innovation and service. These five performance dimensions, when done well, deliver value to the customer and competitive advantage to you and your organization. Throughout the text Bateman & Snell remind students of these five dimensions and their impact on the “bottom line” with marginal icons contributing to the leadership and collaboration theme, which is the key to successful management. People working with one another, rather than against, is essential to competitive advantage.

A Seat at the Table:How Top Salespeople Connect and Drive Decisions at the Executive Level Best Review

A Seat at the Table is a book for the ages: A volume of advice designed for the modern salesperson who wants to distinguish himself/herself and offer potential customers cutting -edge service and competitive advantage. This book takes a different approach to selling- an approach that shifts the emphasis away from trying to offer the most product for the lowest price, over to a strategy that involves creating the most value possible for the customer.

Making connections with the people that matter most is important to any salesperson and this book effectively demonstrates what it takes to get your message across to the executives and other decision makers in any business. The executives are the ones who need to be swayed and this book effectively shows how to talk to them and how to prove to them that your product or service will create value for both your company and theirs, creating a win- win situation. Customers nowadays consider value paramount to any buying decision and this book effectively shows how a salesperson can build a partnership with customers that benefits all parties involved.

A Seat at the Table recommends taking several steps to cement the deal and the book offers many different bits of advice for the determined salesperson to follow. The book includes specific questions to ask and even samples of statements to make to a potential customer in order to improve the odds that you, the salesperson, will seal the deal. The book includes some tables and graphs as well, to illustrate key points, and it is written in an outline format, making it easy to refer back to as a reference guide and training tool for salespersons of all ages. I like the format of this book and I like that it includes examples showing exactly what approaches to take in order to complete a sale. Too often, books about selling talk a great talk, but they don’t offer enough examples that explain exactly how to carry out the book’s message. A Seat at the Table explains everything quite nicely, with solid organization and clear wording.

Selling has changed over the years and today’s salesperson needs to approach the sale from a different perspective. The most important lesson to take from this book is that customers nowadays want more than just the best price. Customers want business assistance from the salesperson and they want to know how a particular product or service they purchase is going to add value. Salespeople can achieve this by becoming businesspeople who sell. Doing all of these things will earn the salesperson the much- coveted seat at the table; building a lasting relationship with the customer that provides benefits to all involved.

A Seat at the Table:How Top Salespeople Connect and Drive Decisions at the Executive Level Overview

Named Best in Category, Sales, in 800-CEO-READ’s Business Book Awards

Marc Miller, author of the bestselling Selling is Dead, delivers another critical tool for connecting with decision makers to make more and bigger sales. A Seat at the Table offers a new sales approach: stop selling and start helping customers win, win bigger, and win more often.

Customers only care about one thing: value. And the only proven way to increase sales productivity is to deliver new and different forms of value. Salespeople must become experts in their customers’ businesses and help them generate better results. Readers will learn that evolving from “salespeople” to “businesspeople who sell” will earn them a seat at the table–the place reserved for those select people who guide the strategic direction of an enterprise.

A Seat at the Table gives practical advice on how to better connect with decision makers. When they can do this, salespeople will be in a position to create demand for their products and services, protect their core business, and close more sales.

Customer Reviews

Informed guide on selling big-ticket items to senior executives – Rolf Dobelli – Switzerland
Do you enthusiastically look forward to having someone stop by to sell you something? Probably not. But how do you feel when a trusted adviser comes in to help enhance your strategy? You’re grateful for the counselor’s time and valuable advice. If you want the welcome mat to be out when you call, heed sales expert Marc Miller, who shows salespeople how to change their image from product hustlers to strategic consultants. Even if some of its strategies seem hard to achieve, getAbstract believes that this book is useful for salespeople who handle big-ticket products and services with extended “sales cycles,” those who sell entirely new products or methods, or those selling commodities who need to shift customers’ concerns from price to value.

Customers only care about VALUE! – J. Frank – Louisville, KY
The best strategy to use when approaching anbd speaking with a customer or potential cusatomer. The only thing our customers care about today is VALUE!

Really nails what is important as a salesperson – Wallstreet Jim –
I am fortunate to have received sales training from Marc and his company (Sogistics). His understanding of the sales process in the eyes of the customer helps sales personnel learn how to add genuine value for their customers and increase sales for their companies. In this book, Marc builds on his previous work (Selling is Dead) and drives home the importance of becoming a true solutions provider for customers. The days of banging on doors and reading line cards to customers are long gone. Today, sales personnel need to thoroughly understand the customer’s business before the first visit, and become part of the customer’s teams driving programs to completion. Marc also adds new tools in this book to make the sales process more efficient for both sales personnel and the customer. All in all, an excellent work and one that I highly recommend.

I’ve recommended it for coworkers who have problems with blowing up at others. I’ve recommended it to anyone with a temper problem. I’ve recommended it for parents.
I’m so glad I ran into this book: all because I adopted a “special needs” dog and had to recondition some undesirable behavior out of him. I thought I was learning to help him, and I ended up helping my whole life. I’m a better trainer at my job, I’m a more affective wife, and a much better parent. And frankly, I like people so much more now.

Customer Reviews

Wishing for more concrete dog training ideas – Y. Becerra – Austin, TX
I bought Ms. Pryor’s book on the recommendation of a friend who has been reading Ms. Pryor’s work. I was looking to get ideas from Ms. Pryor on how to address common problems with dogs–such as walking freely at my side, and to stop barking at the sound of doorbells. Among her books, I chose this one because it had the word “dog,” in it and I was expecting most of the book to provide examples and experiences with dogs but that was not the case. I was aware that Ms. Pryor had trained dolphins, nevertheless, I thought her focus would be on dogs. The book offers a variety of behavioral training approaches but most are explained in the context of dolphins she trained, human behaviors we try to change in our relationships and in some rare instances, dog behavior. To put it bluntly, I’ve been disappointed with the book. I’m in the last chapter and am straining to get it finished.

Excellent book! Good tips! – michelle34 – los angeles, ca
Great tips for the average reader. Just be sure to read it cover to cover and not take notes out of context. Easy read and very good tips that can help with kids, spouses, in laws, and pets.

Not the best introduction to clicker training—so what’s the answer? – J. Tew – Delaware, Ohio USA
Any serious dog trainer, shelter/rescue volunteer or dog owner eventually needs to read Don’t Shoot the Dog but it would not be my first choice for a novice dog owner intent on “taming” their beloved bundle of energy. Pat Miller wrote a better introduction to clicker training, The Power of Positive Dog Training but even that would not be my first read. Perhaps one of Ian Dunbar’s earlier books, Teaching a New Dog Old Tricks, or Dr. Dunbar’s Good Little Dog Book. I’ve read dozens of doggie books and have yet to find the perfect one. Patricia McConnell has several short ones that deal with specific issues that are very good.

It amazes me how ardent supporters of “All Positive” training are but I suspect that most of them really don’t understand classical and operant conditioning and few have studied any books about clicker training. I believe there are two types of clicker trainers: (1) people with a clicker hanging from their wrist and (2) true dog trainers who happen to use a clicker.

While I do not use aversive methods (but I did as recently as six years ago) that does not remotely mean that my three dogs weighing in at from 70-130 pounds don’t know the meaning of “NO!” or that they don’t have limits and boundaries. To me “NO!” is a management word (as opposed to a training term), meaning, “stop whatever you are doing instantly.” I doubt that I use it more than once a week. “NO!” is like setting off the fire sprinkler system—it’s an emergency measure beyond which there are no “easy” remedies. Off leash and without a remote device I have to know that a sharp, “leave it”, “here!” or “Uh-Uh” or “enough!” will instantly bring a smiling Great Dane or Weimaraner back to me. If there is a daredevil squirrel jumping from tree to tree it can be difficult to break their focus but the three of them sitting at the base of the tree staring longingly upward as if in a trance means they aren’t getting in any trouble and they will begrudgingly respond to me…eventually.

It also is surprising to discover how impassioned the other side is—the so called “traditional” trainers. Many of them who are in the business have probably seen their revenue shrink. Some, based on their rantings, aren’t very bright or educated. Others are just really intent on dominating someone or something. When they start talking about how much more humane their prong collars are than The Gentle Leader…

If you have a dog and are not enjoying the experience—good for you for attempting to learn some possible answers by buying a book. Sadly, it probably won’t be enough. You need a trainer to train you as much as to train your dog.

Don’t be wowed by the slickest web site and view with suspicion franchise dog training operations. A local shelter or rescue might have some suggestions. You might check with a local hospital that allows therapy dogs and find out who trained them or certified them. At a local dog park seek out the owners with well balanced dogs and ask them.

Degrees are nice when coupled with hands on experience and successes. Telephone consults are worthless. Expect that the top of the game in terms of dog training and behavior assessment will be not only few and far between but heavily booked and not inexpensive.

The two best in my area, both women, both educated but not doctoral level, both widely admired, both do hours of pro bono work for shelter and rescues, both own big dogs of breeds with aggressive reputations, both with many years of documented success rehabilitating dogs with problems. Not every dog owner needs their services. For most people, a reputable entry level group class will be invaluable.

People working with one another, rather than against, is essential to competitive advantage.

good book – P. Flores – San Luis Obispo, California United States
I purchased this book for a class, and I must say I’m pretty happy about it. It is an easy read and has lots of tips as you read. A good book for my class.

hardcover not available – Patricia Southard – Las Vegas, Nevada
The seller was responsive to me, however I was sent a soft cover instead of the hardcover. He did offer to compensate me for not getting the hardcover. I need the hardcover which has pictures and color as opposed to the soft cover which was all in black and white.

I can’t wait to put the information in it to use later this year!

It covers 32 reasonably common (and tasty) edible wild plants, in extensive detail, includes multiple full-color pictures, harvesting/locating tips, and prep/cooking information. The writing style is less dry facts and more of a narrative – I actually read this book straight through when I got it, instead of just using it to reference specific information. It was that well written.

From the plants listed, this book seems to be best suited for New England and Mid-Atlantic states, although quite a few of the species have a wide spread across the U.S.

Things I found particularly useful:
Edible plants and their toxic (or simply distasteful) look-alikes have their differing traits simply and concisely listed in table-format.
There are ample numbers of informative photos.
There’s a glossery in the back with extremely handy line-drawings.
And there’s a very handy color-coded table that shows when the different plants (and their individual parts) are at their prime for harvesting.

Ronald A. Heifetz analyzes a number of leaders who faced not just crises, but transformational situations. As the book’s title promises, Heifetz doesn’t take shortcuts; he carefully looks at the complexities that leadership, power and authority involve. His examples range from Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. to former U.S. president Lyndon B. Johnson to Adolf Hitler. To make his point, he uses metaphors from biology, music and the military and draws lessons from history. getAbstract recommends this thoughtful look at leadership to all serious students of the topic. It will force you to reject the easy, superficial answers that make up so much of leadership literature. In their place, Heifetz offers approaches for observing contexts, balancing various factors and monitoring growth.

Hard read, but worth it – K. Nierenberg – Sarasota, FL
The first 50 pages can be hard to get through, but ones you get into the examples, it is a very interesting change model, using historical figures as examples. Not only do I understand Heifetz’s adaptive technique for changing an organization, I also got many mini history lessons.

new framework for applying leadership – Jeff SKI Kinsey – Hilton Head Island, SC USA
Heifetz opened my eyes to yet another vantage point with regard to leadership yes, but also to addressing change in business organizations.

I have only read the book once so far, but immediately started rereading it. I would guess that I gained only 10% of the value from that first reading. Only nine more to go!

By the way, it is not an “easy read”. It requires thinking as one reads along. I hate that. However, I also love it. The best speed I could make was one chapter a day. It is that inspiring.

The Nicomachean Ethics: Library Edition Best Review

1.	Overview
In his Nichomachean Ethics, Aristotle develops a framework from which to explore morality, human happiness, and man’s purpose. Some have suggested that Aristotle’s framework for ethics was less rigid than that of his predecessor Plato, who took a deductive approach that began with the forms. Although Aristotle’s form begins with the particulars in a more inductive fashion, his Ethics demonstrates that he is as much as a absolutist as Plato was. He concludes that there are certain values, such as courage or generosity, that are absolutely good, though they may manifest themselves in each individual differently.

2.	Book I. Happiness
The ultimate purpose behind each person’s existence is the attainment of happiness, which Aristotle defines as the contemplation of universal truth. Happiness is not for Aristotle a subjective feeling but rather an objective state that comes about when the soul engages in activity that accords with virtue.
In order to determine what this state of happiness looks like, Aristotle must define virtue. He first equates virtue with excellence in furthering man’s purpose. Just as sharpness is the quality that makes a knife excellent because it furthers the knife’s purpose, so too must we look to man’s purpose in order to determine the qualities that further it. Aristotle holds that man’s purpose is to lead a life of reason and deliberation. Happiness is thus equated with the rational activity of the soul that seeks to contemplate and understand reality. Virtue furthers this purpose and leads to a more complete life.

3.	Books II, III, IV. Virtue of Character and the Preconditions of Virtue
What are the virtues that enabled man to fulfill his purpose? Aristotle defines moral virtue is a “mean” between the extremes of excess and deficiency. It is not an “average” between extremes, but rather, a central, balanced position. Moderation is the key to the virtues. For example, courage is a virtue that is the mean between cowardice and rashness: whereas the cowardly will not act at all, the rash will rush into imprudent and risky action. The courageous, in contrast, act at the right time and to the right extent in undertaking the right degree of risk. Similarly, pride is the mean between vanity and humility and gentleness is the mean between irascibility and spiritlessness.
In matters of wealth, the two extremes are prodigality, which leads to waste, and meanness or stinginess, which attaches too much importance on wealth. Generosity or liberality, in contrast, is the mean in matters pertaining to wealth. Wealth is therefore best used by the generous man, who spends for the sake of the noble and right; he will give the right amount to the right people at the right time.
Among the other virtues, Aristotle discusses magnanimity, temperance, truthfulness, justice, and wit. All of these virtues manifest themselves differently in each individual, but they always hold the characteristic of moderation between extremes. The more the individual acts out with knowledge and self-discipline in accordance with these virtues by making moral choices for the good, the more the individual will acquire virtue and true happiness.

4.	Book VII. Incontinence
Aristotle distinguishes between three bad moral states–vice, incontinence, and brutishness–and their contrary states–virtue, continence, and superhuman virtue. He focuses his discussion on continence and incontinence. Whereas incontinence is weakness of will that impedes an individual from acting according to what he knows to be good, continence is the strength to do as he knows to be good and successfully resist the passions.
When one commits a vice, he acts immorally according to his choice. When he acts incontinently, however, he acts against what he knows to be the moral good, and thus acts against what his mind wills. Incontinent action is therefore not vice in the strict sense, and one may be consciously aware that he is committing an incontinent act while he is in the act of committing it.
The pleasures that may lead to incontinency revolve around three kinds of activities: (i) unnecessary pleasures, such as honor and wealth; (ii) things worthy of avoidance; and (iii) the necessary functions for life, such as food and sexual intercourse. An incontinent man is unable to abide by his resolutions to resist these desires.

5.	Book VIII. Friendship and Community
Although a life of intellectual virtue is man’s highest state of happiness, it involves a level of isolation that is not completely possible for man. Because man is a social creature, a necessary part of his life involves community and friendship, the relationship where a man acts out for the good of another and tastes his joys and shares his sorrows as though they were his own. Yet while man engages in friendship and community, his decisions should be governed by the intellect in accordance with virtue. It is the purpose of politics and the city to enable the framework from which men can realize this vision and thus live the good life.

6.	Book X. Pleasure
As for pleasure, Aristotle does not equate it with the hedonistic sense that it has come to acquire in our modern day. Rather, pleasure is for Aristotle the ultimate good that results from virtuous action. Because virtue is inextricably tied up to happiness, the virtuous man leads the most pleasant life. Although the end or purpose of virtue is not pleasure, the virtuous man, because he engages in virtue for its own sake, will experience pleasure as a natural consequence of his nature.

Excellent insights into human nature – Theodore Andre – Ventura, CA United States
Terence Irwin is to be thanked and congratulated for translating a difficult work by Aristotle and for providing over one hundred pages of notes that helps the student to understand and appreciate Aristotle’s classic work on Ethics.

Irwin’s notes are thorough and allow a person to study the Ethics without a professor. Most of us, however, need a teacher when it is time to read Aristotle. And a teacher who uses Irwin’s translation will be greatly appreciated by students. I become convinced of this each semester since my college Ethics class is centered on Aristotle’s Ethics and Irwin makes my job much, much easier.

Here’s what I’ve learned. Why does Aristotle think that the life of pleasure is not the best life?

Pleasure is not the highest good for Aristotle because:
1. Happiness is continuous and pleasure is not (1177 a 20);
2. Pleasure is good and allows us to get back to the hard work of virtue (1175 a 20);
3. The philosopher should learn how to make the hard work of virtue pleaurable (1176 a 1);
4. Pleaure is a limited action of the body but happiness is the unlimited action of the mind (1177 b
25);
5. Pleasure is a tool for happiness, just as money, power, fame, beauty and priviledge (1099 b 1);
6. And happy people know that the best pleasure is found in friendship (1155 a 5).

Next, whether the life of pleasure might be excellent? Yes, since
1. The happy and excellent person can usually figure out the genuine cause of pleasure (1174 a 15);
2. Pleasure is natural and necessary for life (1172 b 10);
3. But there’s more to life than amusing oneself all day (1176 b 35). What is there more to life? Making pleasure inferior to friendship, since friends will encourage us to do the hard work of virtue.

Revisiting the Source Book on Virtue – Katherine M. Ernsting – Ann Arbor, Michigan
I write this to convince anyone who, like me, lived a good chunk of their life without investigating this book, that it’s time to get a copy and carve out a few hours. Civilizations have ordered themselves around concepts like the “Golden Mean,” that every ethical virtue involves finding a balance between excess and deficiency, or that virtue is an end in itself–one that can only be lived and not merely talked about. I personally like the idea that many of the cultures of the world were tutored by the thinking of the man who wrote: “We are not studying in order to know what virtue is, but to become good, for otherwise there would be no profit in it.” (NE 2.2)

A must-have translation. – L. R. – Colombia
Although I don’t think Irwin’s translation of Nicomachean Ethics is the best one available, and although I am also disagree with maybe half of his interpretations in the second part of the book -which, I guess, is normal in every philosophical discussion-, I do think it’s an useful tool and an obligatory reference in any Nicomachean ethics’ study. A “worth choosing” translation of an absolutly “worthy of choice” book.

You may have seen its basic premise; e.g., in an email that’s
been widely circulated on the Internet (without giving proper
credit to Parker):

* At 211 degrees, water is hot.

At 212 degrees, it boils.

And with boiling water, comes steam.

And with steam, you can power a train.

One degree.

Applying one extra degree of temperature to water means the difference
between something that is simply very hot and something that generates
enough force to power a machine–a beautifully uncomplicated metaphor
that ideally should feed our every endeavor–consistently pushing us to
make the extra effort in every task, action and effort we undertake.
Two-twelve serves as a forceful drill sergeant with its motivating and
focused message while adhering to a scientific law–a natural law. It
reminds us that seemingly small things can make tremendous
differences. So simple is the analogy, that you can stop reading right
now, walk away with the opening thought firmly planted in your mind
and benefit from it for the rest of your life.

I like how Parker then expands this premise through a series
of thought-provoking facts, including this one:

* Two of auto racing’s premier events are The Daytona 500
(stock car) and the Indianapolis 500 (formula one). Each takes
roughly three to three and half hours to complete. In the 10-year
period between 1997 and 2006, combining all 20 races, the winner
took the checkered flag by an average margin of 1.71 seconds and
took home ,426,003 in first place prize money. The average
prize for the second place finisher was 6,464–a difference of
9,539 – roughly half of the amount banked by the winner.

The author also offers a series of action steps you can take, such as:

* Eliminate one half hour of television watching each day and get
182.5 hours each year to allocate elsewhere (equivalent to four and
half weeks at work).

And he concludes with several reflections that will get you
thinking about life . . . I particularly liked the following:

* Complaining once less a day chokes off 365 seeds of negativity
a year.

As the holidays approach, methinks 212 would be the perfect
stocking stuffer for almost anybody on your list–including your
children and grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews, who
could all gain from Parker’s valuable insights.

212: The Extra Degree Overview

212º the extra degree(tm) is an inspiring book that focuses on the essential fundamental of effort– the primary fundamental that feeds all others. Its purpose is to inspire the extra level of effort that produces exponential results. Let 212 become a part of everyone’s vocabulary– a way to say “go get ‘em” and a way to say “great work” — a tagline as powerful as some of the world’s most successful brands but one you can implement with your most valuable asset — your people.

great seller and good book – Deborah S. Anderson – Arizona, USA
The shipping was fast, the product was perfect and in excellant shape…I highly recommend this seller…It was a pleasure doing business with you and definately will do so again….this wasn’t the book that I was looking for but it was in excellant condition

Little things DO make a big difference! – Joel Katte – Home of the Milwaukee Brewers
I’ve always been a firm believer in the expression “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” At a time when stressors are at an all-time high, this book serves as a gentle reminder that our demeanor, disposition, and overall presence has a huge impact on the results we get in our work and lives. This book is not in your face with self-help strategies, but it’s also not packed with earth shattering new insights. Buy it, read it, and remember one degree does make all the difference in the world.
“At 211 degrees, water is hot.
At 212 degrees, it boils.” One degree can make all the difference!

Great Motivational Book for you and your friends/family/coworkers – Deborah Crawford – Memphis, TN
212 The Extra Degree by Sam Parker and Mac Anderson is a small book with some big ideas and a great way of simplifying the notion of taking action and achieving more.

The premise is:

“At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive.”

So, it’s about the power of one degree, or that tiny bit of extra effort that can make all the difference in our lives.

It’s about raising your awareness and understanding that one extra bit of effort, one additional bit of action, can totally change your results. To that end, they have included some quite interesting stories, statistics and quotes throughout the book.

Some of these you will be familiar with, particularly if you are a student of motivational literature. But, some, you might find worth learning about.

One of these is that the average margin of victory in the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500 over the last ten years has been 1.54 seconds (how quick is that?) and that the winner–the driver who got there 1.54 seconds faster than the one behind him won more than double the prize money. That’s an expensive couple of seconds.

The book is divided into five sections/chapters.

1–Introduction – What 212 degrees is all about.
2–Thoughts and Facts–quotes and examples that illustrate the concept.
3–Stories about Success, Attitude, Leadership, Kindness, Commitment, Belief, Focus and Perseverance.
4–Actions. Sample action steps which will help you heat things up to 212.
5–Reflections. Information about using the 212 information to improve your life–with examples on such ideas as practicing kindness, stopping complaining, and more.

Maintaining motivation can be difficult. Inertia overtakes us and we dig ourselves a rut and hunker down in it, or we burn ourselves out trying to do and be everything and dig ourselves a hole and crawl in. Having resources like this book on hand can help you climb back out and get back to work on what you are supposed to be doing. Then, you’ll find yourself climbing mountains and raising the bar. The view is so much better up there!

This book and/or DVD are great for gifts, too–particularly graduations, or for people just starting new adventures such as new jobs, new businesses, enrolling in college, or training for a marathon or 5K.

Winning the Loser’s Game, Fifth Edition: Timeless Strategies for Successful Investing Best Review

Ancient Greek lore tells us of Sisyphus who was banished to the underworld to push a heavy stone up a steep hill. Approaching the top of the hill, the stone would tumble to the bottom whereupon he would begin his labors anew. Poor Sisyphus was condemned to repeat this cycle for eternity.

Today’s investors can be excused for feeling a bit like Sisyphus. We have been dutifully adding to our investments over the years and watching our portfolios grow nicely. But just as the outlines of a comfortable retirement begin looming on the horizon, the bottom of the market falls out, our portfolio values plummet, and, like Sisyphus, we are forced to start over. Unfortunately, we are a few years older and, unlike Sisyphus, we do not have eternity to make things right. Time appears to be running out.

Out of fear or disgust or both, many of us have bailed out of the stock market, locked in losses, and vowed never to return. We have placed our remaining funds in CDs, US Government securities, or short-term bonds. A recent Wall Street Journal article described a nascent trend to return to the soil – people buying farmland, determined to lead a rural lifestyle with the goal of becoming self-sufficient. No matter what happens in the capital markets, you always have your land and the ability to grow food on it. Well, before you throw in the towel and retreat to CDs or Green Acres, you owe it to yourself to read the new 5th edition of Charles Ellis’ investment classic “Winning the Loser’s Game.” Understand why you have had a bad investment experience and what you may have done to make it worse. Retreating to conservative investments or the rural life will likely give rise to a different set of problems that could leave you facing more disappointment down the road.

I sensed four principle themes running through this book: (1) there has been a fundamental change in the stock market over the past fifty years which has made consistently beating the market increasingly improbable; (2) inflation is the biggest obstacle standing between you and financial security; (3) regression to the mean is a powerful force in the markets and must be factored into your investment decisions; and (4) focusing on short-term results often leads to long-term underperformance.

Author Ellis points out that individual investors accounted for about 90% of stock market trading volume during the 1950s and 60s. In those days, savvy professionals could easily outperform amateurs and rightly claim that they could beat the market. But since the 1980s, institutional investors have come to dominate and the old 90-10 ratio was reversed. Today over 90% of stock market trading volume is by institutional investors, not individuals. Professionals are essentially trading with each other and it is their activity which sets market prices. As Ellis points out, these pros are highly educated, hard working, richly compensated, and extremely competitive. They are focused on the market 24/7. It is unrealistic to believe that individuals trading from home can compete with these pros. Trying to do so is playing a loser’s game, hence the title of this book. In such an environment, the best way to play is to not try to beat ‘em, but to join ‘em. This is one of the principle reasons why so many investment gurus recommend low cost index funds for small investors. Let the institutions compete with each other and set stock prices. You just go along for the ride. In the recent debacle, how many individuals made matters worse by trying too hard to beat the market? If you purchase shares of stock, how confident would you be of your decision if you learned that someone at Goldman Sachs sold them to you? Or if you sell shares, would you harbor second thoughts if you learned that someone at JP Morgan was buying them?

We all hope for a long retirement. But Ellis presents us with a sobering statistic, namely that during a 25 to 30-year time frame a relatively modest 3% inflation rate will cut our purchasing power in half. If you have ever observed retirees suffering a slowly declining standard of living, you likely have seen first-hand the damage wrought by inflation. Therefore, it is a focus on beating inflation, not the daily dance of stock prices, that should be your main concern. And it is a focus on the former, not the latter, that separates truly long term investors from the rest of us. This is one of the important lessons the author tries to drive home. Ellis reminds us that, historically, stocks have provided the best real (after inflation) returns compared to most other asset classes. So, as odious as stocks may be to you right now, the prospect of future inflation forces you to consider at least some exposure to the stock market. Bear in mind that with currently low interest rates and an economy flooded with dollars to stimulate economic activity, the likelihood of significant future inflation is greater than it has been in many years.

Regression to the mean is another way of stating the old saw, “what goes up, must come down.” It is a statistical phenomenon that has been observed in many fields, not just investing. You could almost describe it as a law of nature. Yet how many of us, giddy with delight at rising stock prices, trust that our stocks, like Jack’s beanstalk, will grow to the sky. When lofty stock prices inevitably come tumbling down, we accuse the market of betraying us. We conclude that we have been manipulated by powerful interests out to exploit us; that stock market investing is no better than gambling. So we cash out and vow never to return. Charles Ellis sees this irrational behavior arising from a lack of education. He admonishes you to teach yourself about stock market history so you will not be blindsided by adverse market events. Educating yourself should enable you to recognize that it is unduly high stock prices that should alarm you, and that stocks offer the best opportunity for decent future returns following a market decline, not a rise. When you are instructed to periodically re-balance your portfolio, you will be more prone to take this advice seriously because you know that it takes advantage of regression to the mean.

Another one of the many lessons that Charles Ellis has to teach us is the importance of asset allocation. We are lead astray when we focus on short-term fluctuations in the value of our portfolios. The most significant determinant of our future success is how we distribute our savings across different asset classes, not our specific investments nor their performance yesterday, last month, or last year. The author constantly reminds us that investing is not a competition. It does not matter one whit who we beat or who beats us. Only our personal needs and goals matter. All else is distraction. That’s why oft-published performance rankings prove to have such limited value and can be harmful when they lead people to continually question their investment program. If this book can stop you from chasing performance by hop-scotching from one investment to another, the price will have been well worth it.

In a new chapter prepared for the 5th edition titled “Disaster – Again,” the author discusses the recent market debacle. He admits that while he did see dark clouds forming on the horizon, he never anticipated the magnitude of the market decline. This forced him to do some soul-searching and he thought hard about the investment principles he had been espousing for many years. Had he missed something? Was he giving sound advice? Not to worry. He claims to be more convinced than ever that the core investment principles he discusses in his book have not been discredited by the events of 2008 and should serve investors well going forward.

Charles Ellis has enjoyed a successful investment career that has spanned nearly 50 years. One must presume that he didn’t write this newest edition because he needs the money. He readily concedes that life has blessed him with good fortune and he feels a responsibility to return the favor by helping others. I was impressed with author’s humility. To me at least, he comes across as a true teacher, not a salesman. I always feel that it is a privilege to have the opportunity to listen to someone who has learned important life lessons and is willing to share those lessons with others. This is especially important when it comes to investing for the future. Our time is limited. We don’t have too many years to recover from mistakes. Learn the lessons in this book and you should be able to not only withstand the sometimes severe contractions that occur in the capital markets, but also to recognize adversity as an opportunity to buy low. You will emerge with a stronger portfolio and, unlike Sisyphus, you will not be condemned to perennially start over.

Winning the Loser’s Game explains why conventional investing is a loser’s game, and how you can easily make it a winner’s game!

Market Efficiency Debate made clear in this classic… – K. Webb – Houston, TX
The debate over Market Efficiency usually destructs because the term “Market Efficiency” can really have two meanings: (1) Prices are Rational and/or (2) that investors can’t consistently beat the market. “Winning the Loser’s Game” is the classic that gives the philosophical underpinnings for what is born out by the empirical evidence: the markets are efficient from the 2nd perspective – investors can’t consistently beat the market. If you think you can beat the market then you have to assume that you know something that all the other smart people don’t know and that you can consistenly capitalize on it. Excellent read and implemented well on the Kindle. A good one to have for your intellectual tool-kit. However, would purchase and read Bernstein’s “Against the Gods” first…

Just my two cents…

Winning the Loser’s Game – W. Bowditch – Waterville, Maine United States
Generally good. Repetitious at times. Good companion book to others. I wouldn’t use it as a sole source. I would recommend under these terms.

Must read for those disappointed with “professional’ money managers – Van M. Snyder – Westchester CTY, NY
Ellis exposes the money managers who claim they can buy a security for you cheap, let it rise up, and then sell just before it drops. The real truth that Ellis lets us in on is that these people don’t know anymore than anyone else, and what REALLY effects the markets are random events that nobody can predict. He also shows that the money managers really only make money buy churning transactions, no matter how high or low a security is. He returns us to finance 101 that tells us MARKETS are efficient, trying to time the market is not.

It makes me feel motivated to do better with my finances, and that is worth the price of the book (hahaha which was free, because my friend purchased it for me!). I do resent that he said that broke people are also FAT. I’m not fat :p.

Most of his advice is great for the typical breadwinner of a family, or a single person. However getting a second job or third job isn’t always a valid option for single parents (when the second job doesn’t pay enough to cover the cost of daycare! or you can’t even find daycare at 7pm to go hit up your second job). I would have appreciated a few more suggestions for those of us already in a time crunch, but good advice regardless.

Take responsibility and turn your financial life around – Terry – Northern CA United States
Larry Winget is a “tell it like it is” author. If you need to get your finances working for you, this book will give you the plan to follow.

There will be no whining tolerated, learn to take responsibility and turn your financial life around.

I can’t believe I had not heard of this great author before.

I love his approach – A. L. Caissie – Garden Grove, CA United States
I quite enjoyed Winget’s short-lived program on A&E, “Big Spender,” in which he bludgeoned people over the head with the truth about their lousy spending habits. This book was purchased as a gift for a relative who is constantly broke. Hopefully, she will get something out of it.
